GFCI Outlet Problems: Testing, Troubleshooting, and Safety

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets are life-saving electrical safety devices designed to prevent electrocution by quickly shutting off power when they detect an imbalance between the hot and neutral conductors, which indicates current is flowing through an unintended path, potentially through a person. GFCI protection is required by the National Electrical Code in areas where water and electricity may come in contact, including kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoor receptacles, laundry rooms, and crawlspaces. Despite their critical safety role, GFCI outlets are among the most commonly deficient items found during home inspections. Problems range from outlets that fail to trip when tested to complete absence of GFCI protection in required locations.
